Best Kilimanjaro Routes – Which Route Should You Choose?

Best Route to Climb Kilimanjaro

There are seven established routes on Mount Kilimanjaro that lead to the summit, Uhuru Peak. Six of these routes approach from the southern side of the mountain, while only one begins on the northern side.
The seven main Kilimanjaro routes are:
1. Northern Circuit Route
2. Lemosho Route
3. Shira Route
4. Machame Route (“Whiskey Route”)
5. Rongai Route 6. Marangu Route (“Coca-Cola Route”)
7. Umbwe Route
The most common question we receive is: “Which is the best route to climb Kilimanjaro?
The answer depends on your goals, experience, and preferences. Here’s an overview to help you decide.

Highest Success Rate & Overall Best Route

For the best chance of reaching the summit, the Lemosho and Machame routes (7–8 days) are highly recommended. These routes offer excellent acclimatization profiles and a shorter, easier summit night. For most climbers, these are the top choices.

Most Scenic Route

The Lemosho Route is widely considered the most beautiful route, offering dramatic landscapes, lush rainforest trails, sweeping views, and spectacular sunsets.

Quietest Route

If avoiding crowds is your priority, the Rongai Route is the quietest option. Starting from the northern side of the mountain, it offers a more remote wilderness feel. However, it has slightly lower success rates compared to Lemosho and Machame.

Most Challenging Route

For experienced trekkers seeking adventure, the Umbwe Route is the steepest and most demanding. Few climbers attempt it due to its low acclimatization profile, but it offers a very direct and intense climb. Another unique option for thrill-seekers is the Crater Camp, a rarely visited overnight stop inside the crater itself.

Route Summaries

• One of the most popular routes with a high success rate.
• Great acclimatization thanks to the “climb high, sleep low” profile.

Lemosho Route
• Excellent acclimatization and high success rates.
• Stunning western approach with remote, untouched scenery.
• Gradual ascent makes it one of the best options for most climbers.
• Fully-catered camping.
Marangu Route
• The only route offering hut accommodations (no camping).
• Shortest route to the summit, but less time to acclimatize.
• Lower success rate and less scenic, as ascent and descent follow the same path.
Rongai Route
• The only route starting from the north.
• Offers a quieter, less crowded trek.
• Early days provide a true wilderness feel.
• Tougher summit night and fewer opportunities for acclimatization.
Umbwe Route
• Steepest and shortest route to the summit.
• Very low success rate due to poor acclimatization profile.
• Remote and quiet during the first two days.
• Suitable only for highly experienced trekkers.
Shira Route
• Similar to Lemosho but starts at a higher altitude.
• Less favorable for acclimatization compared to Lemosho.
• Joins the Machame route after a few days.
Northern Circuit Route
• The longest route on Kilimanjaro, offering the best acclimatization.
• Excellent success rates thanks to gradual ascent.
• Very scenic and quiet, circling around the mountain before the summit.
• Recommended for those with more time

Key Factors to Consider When Choosing a Route

When selecting the best route for your Kilimanjaro climb, consider these six factors:
1. Acclimatization – Routes like Lemosho, Machame, and Northern Circuit provide the best profiles.
2. Summit Night Difficulty – Lemosho and Machame offer shorter summit approaches compared to Marangu and Rongai.
3. Crowds – Rongai and Northern Circuit are quieter, while Machame is very popular.
4. Accommodation – Marangu is the only route with hut lodging; all others require camping.
5. Safety – All routes (except the rarely used Western Breach) are considered safe when done properly.
6. Success Rate – Longer routes generally have higher success rates due to better acclimatization.
