The Lemosho Route is one of the most beautiful and well-balanced routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, offering excellent acclimatization
and stunning scenery from rainforest to alpine desert and glaciers.
This 8-day itinerary provides the best chance for reaching the summit,
with more time to adjust to altitude. The route begins on the western side of the mountain, crossing the scenic Shira Plateau,
and joins the Machame Route before ascending to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). It’s ideal for those seeking both adventure and higher
summit success rates.
DAY O: ARRIVAL TO TANZANIA.
You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro international airport and
transferred to your hotelin Moshi town, you will meet your guide who will
brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure
you have all the necessary mountain gear. The missing gear can be rented
on this day.
DAY 1: MOSHI – LONDOROSI GATE – MTI MKUBWA CAMP

Drive to Londorosi Gate for registration (about 3–4 hours), then continue to the trailhead at Lemosho Glades. Begin your trek through a lush rainforest where you may spot Colobus monkeys and colorful birds. The trail gradually climbs to Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp) for dinner and overnight.
DAY 2: MTI MKUBWA CAMP – SHIRA 1 CAMP

• Distance: 8km / 5mi
• Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

• Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
After breakfast, we leave the rainforest and enter the moorland zone. The trail climbs steadily with panoramic views of the Shira Ridge. We reach Shira 1 Camp by afternoon, where you can relax and enjoy your first close view of Kibo Peak.
DAY 3: SHIRA 1 CAMP – SHIRA 2 CAMP

• Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

• Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
We continue across the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic areas. Gentle terrain with views of Mount Meru and the vast plains below. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp where you’ll rest and prepare for higher altitude the next day.
DAY 4: SHIRA 2 CAMP – LAVA TOWER – BARRANCO CAMP
• Elevation: 3,850m / 12,630ft to 4,600m / 15,090ft (Lava Tower), down to 3,950m / 12,960ft
• Distance: 10km / 6mi
• Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
• Habitat: Semi-desert
• Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
This is an important acclimatization day. Hike east up a ridge toward the Lava Tower (4,600m), known as the "Shark’s Tooth," then descend to Barranco Camp. Although you end at nearly the same altitude you started, hiking high and sleeping low helps your body adjust.
DAY 5: BARRANCO CAMP – KARANGA CAMP
• Elevation: 3,950m / 12,960ft to 4,050m / 13,290ft
• Distance: 5km / 3mi
• Climbing Time: 3–4 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert
• Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
After breakfast, climb the steep Barranco Wall, then follow the trail through ridges and valleys to reach Karanga Camp. The views of Kibo and the southern glaciers are breathtaking.
DAY 6: KARANGA CAMP – BARAFU CAMP
• Elevation: 4,050m / 13,290ft to 4,680m / 15,350ft
• Distance: 4km / 2.5mi
• Climbing Time: 3–4 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert
• Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Continue your climb toward Barafu Camp, your base for the summit push. You have now completed the Southern Circuit, which offers amazing views of the summit. Rest early, have dinner, and prepare for your summit ascent.
DAY 7: BARAFU CAMP – SUMMIT – MWEKA CAMP
• Elevation: 4,680m / 15,350ft to 5,895m / 19,341ft (Uhuru Peak)
• Descent to: 3,100m / 10,170ft
• Distance: 5km up / 12km down
• Hiking Time: 7–8 hours up / 4–6 hours down
• Habitat: Arctic / Moorland
• Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Start your summit attempt around midnight. Climb between the Rebmann and Ratzel Glaciers toward Stella Point (5,739m). After a short rest, continue for another 1–2 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa!
Enjoy your moment at the summit, take photos, then begin your descent to Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch.
DAY 8: MWEKA CAMP – MWEKA GATE – MOSHI

• Distance: 10km / 6mi
• Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
• Habitat: Rainforest
• Meals: Breakfast
Continue your descent through lush forest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate. Our driver will transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi for a well-deserved rest and celebration dinner.
DAY 9: DEPARTURE
After breakfast, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure or continue with a Tanzania safari extension.
