Marangu Route: Kilimanjaro Climbing

Marangu route

ROUTE OVERVIEW

The Marangu Route is the oldest and most established trekking trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. Often nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route” due to the availability of soft drinks at some huts along the way, it is the only route that provides dormitory-style hut accommodation instead of camping.
This route approaches the mountain from the southeast and is considered one of the shortest paths to the summit, typically completed in 5 or 6 days. Its gradual slopes make it appear easier compared to other trails; however, the rapid ascent allows less time for acclimatization, which results in a lower summit success rate compared to longer routes.

Despite this, Marangu remains a popular choice among trekkers due to its:
• Simple logistics (no camping equipment required)
• Lower cost compared to other routes
• Comfortable huts equipped with solar power, bunk beds, and communal dining areas
The trail passes through all five ecological zones of Kilimanjaro, from lush rainforest and moorlands to alpine desert and the arctic summit zone, leading adventurers to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — the Roof of Africa.
