The Northern Circuit Route is the newest, longest, and most scenic trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting from the western side, it follows the same path as the Lemosho Route across the Shira Plateau before turning north to circle around the quieter, less-traveled slopes of the mountain.
This trail is typically completed in 8 to 9 days, making it the longest route on Kilimanjaro. The extended duration allows excellent acclimatization, resulting in one of the highest summit success rates of all routes. Trekkers enjoy diverse landscapes, including lush rainforest, expansive moorlands, volcanic rock formations, alpine desert, and panoramic views across the rugged northern side, before summiting via Gilman’s Point and Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).
Accommodation is in tents throughout the trek, offering a true wilderness experience. While longer and more expensive than other routes, the Northern Circuit is highly recommended for those who want the best balance of scenery, acclimatization, and a less crowded trail.
