ROUTE OVERVIEW

The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side, near the Kenyan border. Known for its gentle, gradual ascent and relatively unspoiled wilderness, Rongai is often considered one of the easier routes, making it suitable for trekkers with less experience or those seeking a quieter climb.
Unlike the busier southern and western routes, Rongai offers a more remote experience with fewer crowds, especially in the early days of the trek. The trail passes through pine forests, heathlands, and alpine desert before joining the Marangu Route at Kibo Hut for the final summit push to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).
With a typical duration of 6 to 7 days, Rongai provides good acclimatization when planned with the longer itinerary. Accommodation is in tents, maintaining the authentic camping experience. While the scenery is considered less dramatic than routes like Machame or Lemosho, Rongai offers unique advantages, including drier conditions and higher success rates.
