The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side, near the Kenyan border. It’s one of the quietest and driest routes, offering beautiful wilderness scenery and a gradual slope that makes it ideal for trekkers with limited experience.
This 7-day itinerary includes an important acclimatization day, giving climbers a higher chance of successfully reaching the summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895m) while enjoying panoramic views throughout the trek.
DAY O: ARRIVAL TO TANZANIA.
You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro international airport and
transferred to your hotelin Moshi town, you will meet your guide who will
brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure
you have all the necessary mountain gear. The missing gear can be rented
on this day.
DAY 1: MOSHI – NALEMORU GATE – SIMBA CAMP
• Elevation: 1,950m to 2,650m
• Distance: 8km
• Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
• Habitat: Montane Forest
After breakfast, drive to Nalemoru Gate (Rongai Gate) for registration. Begin your hike through farmland and pine forest, where you may spot colobus monkeys. The trail climbs gently to Simba Camp, offering fine views across the Kenyan plains.

DAY 2: SIMBA CAMP – SECOND CAVE CAMP
• Elevation: 2,650m to 3,450m
• Distance: 9km
• Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
• Habitat: Moorland
Continue your ascent through open moorland, enjoying views of Kibo Peak. Stop for lunch at Second Cave Camp, a scenic and quiet campsite. This stage helps your body adjust gradually to altitude.

DAY 3: SECOND CAVE CAMP – KIKILEWA CAMP
• Elevation: 3,450m to 3,600m
• Distance: 6km
• Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
• Habitat: Moorland
A steady hike across small valleys and ridges brings you to Kikilewa Camp, nestled in a sheltered valley surrounded by giant senecios. Afternoon rest and acclimatization.

DAY 4: KIKILEWA CAMP – MAWENZI TARN CAMP

• Distance: 6km
• Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today’s hike is short but steep, leading you up grassy slopes to the spectacular Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located beneath the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. Spend the afternoon relaxing or exploring nearby ridges for acclimatization.

DAY 5: ACCLIMATIZATION DAY AT MAWENZI TARN
• Elevation: 4,330m
• Habitat: Alpine Desert
A crucial rest day for acclimatization. You can take a short hike around Mawenzi Ridge for breathtaking views and to help your body adjust to higher altitude. Return to camp for lunch and relaxation.

DAY 6: MAWENZI TARN – KIBO HUT
• Elevation: 4,330m to 4,700m
• Distance: 9km
• Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert
Cross the Saddle, a wide and barren landscape between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The trail is gradual but feels challenging due to altitude. Arrive at Kibo Hut by mid-afternoon, rest, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.

DAY 7: KIBO HUT – UHURU PEAK – HOROMBO HUT – MOSHI
• Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak) then down to 3,720m
• Distance: 16km total
• Hiking Time: 12–14 hours
• Habitat: Arctic / Moorland
Start your summit push around midnight, reaching Gilman’s Point (5,685m) by sunrise, then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa! After celebrating, descend to Horombo Hut for lunch and rest, then continue down to Moshi (transfer by vehicle).

DAY 8: HOTEL TO AIRPORT
After breakfast, you continue with your travel plans or take a transfer to
the Kilimanjaro Airport.
